Why Nighttime Pedestrian Accidents Often Lead to Serious Injuries
Pedestrian crashes that occur at night often lead to severe outcomes. Lower visibility makes it harder for drivers to notice people crossing or walking near roadways, especially in areas without strong lighting.
Vehicle speed can also increase the risk of injury. Even at moderate speeds, a person struck by a vehicle may suffer life-threatening trauma because pedestrians lack physical protection.
Road design and traffic patterns may also influence these incidents. Wide roads, multiple lanes, and limited crossing areas can create situations where people attempt to cross outside marked crosswalks.
Clothing visibility can also affect how quickly drivers notice pedestrians. Dark clothing or poor lighting may reduce drivers’ reaction time when approaching an area where someone is walking or crossing.
