What Are the Risks of Golf Carts Crossing or Traveling on Public Roads in New York?
Golf carts are not built to the same safety standards as regular passenger vehicles, and using them near or on public roads carries real risks. They lack the structural protection, speed capacity, and visibility features that help keep drivers safe in traffic. When a golf cart and a full-size vehicle meet in a collision, the person in the cart has very little protection against the force of impact.
In New York, golf carts are generally not permitted on public roads unless local ordinances specifically allow it. State routes like Route 12, which carry faster-moving traffic, present a particular danger for low-speed vehicles attempting to cross or enter the roadway. Drivers of larger vehicles may have limited time to react when a golf cart unexpectedly enters their path.
