Allen Co., IN (March 5, 2026) – Authorities have identified the driver who died in a three-vehicle crash last week in Allen County, according to updated information released on Thursday, March 5.
Emergency units responded Friday afternoon, February 27, to the intersection of West Washington Center Road and O’Day Road after reports of a serious crash involving a pickup truck, a car, and a concrete pump truck. Investigators said a car briefly stopped at the stop sign on O’Day Road before attempting to cross Washington Center Road.
Officials reported that the car entered the intersection and collided with an oncoming concrete pump truck, which had the right of way on Washington Center Road. The pump truck driver attempted to swerve to avoid the car but struck the passenger side of the vehicle and then collided head-on with a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.
Authorities identified the pickup driver who died in the crash as 21-year-old Matthew David Jones of Fort Wayne. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger in the car were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. No additional details about their current conditions have been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Why Intersections Without Four-Way Stops Can Be Risky
Intersections where only one roadway has a stop sign can create challenges for drivers who must judge when it is safe to cross or turn. Vehicles traveling on the main road often have the right of way and may approach at higher speeds.
Large trucks add another factor because they require more time and distance to slow down. Drivers of heavy vehicles may try to avoid a collision, but their size and weight can limit how quickly they can stop or change direction.
Multiple vehicles can become involved if a collision pushes one vehicle into another lane or causes chain reactions in nearby traffic. These conditions often lead to complex crash scenes at busy intersections.
