American Falls, ID (February 24, 2026) – A head-on crash involving two vehicles left a young man and a teen injured on Monday evening on State Highway 39. The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. at Vollmer Loop, west of American Falls.
According to reports, a 2014 Hyundai Sonata driven by a teen was heading southbound on SH-39. A 2000 Dodge Dakota, driven by a 21-year-old man from Aberdeen, was traveling northbound. Investigators say the Hyundai crossed into the northbound lane to pass a slower vehicle and struck the Dodge head-on.
Both drivers were hurt in the collision. The highway was blocked for more than two hours as emergency units responded and cleared the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they recover.
What Makes Head-On Collisions So Dangerous on Two-Lane Highways?
Head-on crashes are among the most serious types of roadway accidents. On two-lane highways, vehicles travel in opposite directions, separated only by a center line. If a driver crosses that line, even briefly, the result can be a direct impact at combined speeds.
Passing slower vehicles can increase risk, especially at night or in areas with limited visibility. Drivers may misjudge distance or speed when overtaking another car. Oncoming traffic may appear farther away than it actually is.
Because there is little space to avoid a vehicle entering the opposite lane, reaction time is limited. The force of impact in these crashes often leads to significant vehicle damage and injuries.
