Chicago, IL (July 6, 2026) – Seven people were hospitalized after a fire broke out in the trash chute of a high-rise apartment building on Saturday morning in Chicago’s Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.
According to the Chicago Fire Department, firefighters responded at approximately 6 a.m. on July 4 to a residential high-rise in the first block of West 71st Street following reports of a fire.
Fire officials said the blaze originated in the building’s trash chute. Emergency crews evacuated the building while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of residents.
Authorities said seven people were injured and transported to area hospitals for treatment. Four victims were reported in good condition, while three others were listed in fair condition. An additional 12 people were evaluated at the scene, but declined medical treatment.
No firefighters were reported injured, and officials have not released further details regarding the extent of the damage or the identities of those hospitalized. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Chicago Fire Department.
