What Makes Interstate Crashes More Dangerous?
Interstate accidents can become serious because vehicles often travel at higher speeds and have limited opportunities to stop suddenly. A jackknifed tractor-trailer can occupy multiple lanes and create a hazard for approaching motorists
Drivers who encounter stopped or disabled vehicles should reduce speed and maintain as much distance as possible. Sudden lane changes can create additional risks, particularly when traffic is moving quickly. Motorists should also watch for debris and vehicles stopping ahead. Staying focused, avoiding distractions, and adjusting speed for traffic conditions can provide more time to react. Drivers should use caution near a roadway accident because secondary collisions may occur when approaching motorists do not see the original hazard in time.
