Atlanta, GA (May 19, 2026) – One person lost their life Tuesday morning after a van overturned along Interstate 85 near the Buford-Spring Connector in Atlanta.
According to reports, the crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. in the northbound express lanes of I-85. Investigators said the driver attempted to avoid missing an exit and suddenly steered the van to the right.
Officials stated the van crossed the gore area before the driver lost control; the vehicle traveled off the shoulder, struck a barrier, crossed back over the exit lane, and hit a guardrail. The impact caused the van to overturn.
Emergency units arrived at the scene and worked to remove a passenger from the wreckage. Authorities confirmed the passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. The driver suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities continue to investigate the accident, and more details will be released as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Sudden Highway Maneuvers Can Lead to Serious Crashes
Abrupt steering movements on highways can quickly cause drivers to lose control, especially at higher speeds. Vehicles may become unstable when crossing lane dividers, shoulders, or gore areas near exits, increasing the risk of rollovers or collisions with barriers and guardrails.
For clearance, crash investigators often review roadway markings, vehicle damage, and tire marks to better understand how a vehicle lost control. In rollover accidents, seatbelt use can also be a major factor in assessing the severity of injuries sustained by occupants.
Highway exit areas may present additional hazards because traffic patterns can change rapidly as drivers merge or attempt late lane changes. Limited reaction time and sudden corrections can make it difficult for drivers to safely recover control once a vehicle begins to slide or overturn.
