Aurora, CO (January 5, 2026) – A civilian was hospitalized following a multi-vehicle crash involving a South Metro Fire Rescue ambulance near the intersection of South Havana St and East Jewell Ave. The crash occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m. on January 5 and led to significant traffic disruption in west Aurora.

According to Aurora Police, the collision began when a driver ran a red light at the intersection, striking another vehicle. The impact caused one of the vehicles to collide with a South Metro Fire Rescue ambulance that was returning to its station and was not carrying a patient at the time.

South Metro Fire officials initially reported that two people were transported to the hospital. However, Aurora Police later confirmed that only one civilian was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No firefighters were hurt in the incident.

Before Aurora Fire Rescue arrived to take over care, the South Metro Fire crew on scene evaluated and treated two individuals involved in the crash. Authorities cited the at-fault driver for running the red light, though that individual has not been publicly identified.

We hope the injured person recovers quickly and thank the first responders for their immediate care and action.

Multi-Vehicle Collisions in Colorado

Crashes involving emergency vehicles, such as the one at South Havana St and East Jewell Ave, serve as critical reminders of how rapidly incidents can escalate when drivers disregard traffic controls. In this case, a red-light violation triggered a chain reaction that not only injured a civilian but also damaged a public safety vehicle actively returning from duty.

Though the ambulance was not carrying a patient, the presence of a fire rescue unit in the collision highlights the unpredictable nature of roadway hazards, even for trained professionals. Multi-vehicle crashes in urban areas like Aurora often result from common infractions such as speeding, distracted driving, or failing to yield, all of which can cause broader consequences when emergency vehicles are involved.

Intersections remain among the most dangerous areas for drivers, particularly those with high traffic volumes and complex signaling systems. Aurora’s emergency crews are trained to provide care in the most challenging situations, but when they become part of the incident, it places additional strain on the city’s emergency resources.

Local officials continue to emphasize intersection safety campaigns and targeted enforcement at high-risk areas like Havana and Jewell. When crashes happen, especially those involving public safety equipment, it brings renewed urgency to community efforts aimed at prevention.
