Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Lead to Extended Highway Closures
When several vehicles are involved in a highway crash, clearing the roadway can take much longer than with smaller incidents. Large trucks, especially semi-trailers, may carry heavy cargo or equipment that must be carefully removed before traffic can resume.
Emergency crews often need space to assess vehicle damage, check for injuries, and secure the area. If hazardous materials are present, additional safety steps may be required before the roadway can reopen.
Heavy vehicles can also block multiple lanes when they overturn or stop at odd angles after a collision. This can make it difficult for tow trucks and cleanup crews to move safely through the scene.
Because of these challenges, major highway crashes frequently result in extended lane closures while crews work to restore safe driving conditions.
