Baker, FL (March 13, 2026) – A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured after being struck by a pickup truck on Thursday evening, March 12, in the parking lot of the Baker Sports Complex in Okaloosa County.
Emergency units responded to the sports complex located at 1450 Charlie Day Road around 6:15 p.m. after reports that a child had been hit by a vehicle. Officials said the pickup truck, driven by a 41-year-old man from Crestview, was traveling east through the parking lot.
The front right side of the pickup struck the child and knocked him to the ground, running over his leg. The driver later stopped after realizing what had happened.
The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured child as he receives medical care.
Why Parking Lot Crashes Can Involve Pedestrians
Parking areas such as sports complexes often become crowded with vehicles and people moving in different directions. Drivers may be traveling slowly, but limited visibility caused by parked vehicles can make it difficult to see pedestrians nearby.
Children can be especially hard for drivers to spot in busy parking lots. Their smaller height and unpredictable movement may place them outside the driver’s line of sight, particularly when vehicles or large objects block the view.
In congested parking areas, both drivers and pedestrians share the same space. Reduced visibility, frequent stopping, and sudden movements can increase the risk of collisions when people walk close to moving vehicles.
