Why Pedestrian Incidents on Interstates Are So Dangerous
Interstates like I-75 are designed for high-speed travel with limited access points. Pedestrians are not permitted on most sections because vehicles move at highway speeds and drivers do not expect foot traffic. When someone enters travel lanes, drivers may have little time to react.
Tractor-trailers require longer stopping distances than passenger vehicles. Even with quick braking, a large truck may not be able to avoid a person in the roadway. Nighttime conditions can further reduce visibility, increasing the risk of fatal outcomes.
Staying off interstate lanes and using designated crossings or overpasses is key to pedestrian safety. High-speed roadways offer little margin for error when vehicles and foot traffic intersect.
