Why Serious Highway Crashes Often Require Air Transport
When crashes result in critical injuries, air medical transport is sometimes used to speed up care. Helicopters can quickly move patients to trauma centers equipped to handle severe injuries, especially when time is a major factor.
Highways like Hwy 21 often carry steady traffic at higher speeds. When a serious collision occurs, emergency crews may close both directions to allow room for medical helicopters to land safely and for responders to treat the injured.
Road closures can last for hours depending on the severity of the crash and the need for cleanup. Air transport is typically reserved for the most serious cases, where rapid access to specialized medical teams can make a significant difference in outcomes.
