How Head-On Highway Collisions Typically Occur
Head-on crashes often happen when a vehicle crosses the center line or drifts into oncoming traffic. Contributing factors can include distraction, fatigue, weather conditions, or sudden steering corrections.
On rural highways, higher speeds can increase both the severity of injuries and the time needed to respond to unexpected hazards. Even when seat belts are used, the force of a direct frontal impact can still result in fatal outcomes.
Investigators typically examine roadway markings, vehicle damage, and scene evidence to determine how one vehicle entered the opposite lane. These findings help clarify the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
