Why Abandoned Vehicles on Roadways Can Lead to Serious Crashes
Vehicles left on active roads can create sudden hazards for drivers, especially at night. When a car blocks part of a lane, approaching drivers may have little time to react, increasing the chance of a collision.
Low visibility makes these situations more dangerous. Without clear warning signals like hazard lights or reflective markers, other drivers may not see the stopped vehicle until it is too late. Speed and traffic flow can also affect how quickly someone can avoid the obstruction.
Drivers are generally encouraged to move disabled vehicles off the roadway when possible or use warning devices to alert others. Even a short delay in visibility can lead to serious injuries when another vehicle makes contact with a stopped car.
