Staten Island, NY (May 6, 2026) – One person was hurt in a multi-car crash on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Tuesday morning, May 5.
The crash happened around 9:40 a.m. on the lower level of the Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge. Emergency units responded to the scene and found four vehicles involved in the collision.
One person was taken to Staten Island University Hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been released. One lane on the bridge was blocked, leading to heavy congestion on the lower level, while the Staten Island Expressway remained clear.
Officials continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We hope those hurt recover quickly.
Why Bridge Crashes Can Disrupt Traffic Quickly
Bridges often have limited lanes and little room for vehicles to move around during incidents. When a crash blocks even one lane, traffic can slow down or stop in a short time.
High traffic volume adds to the problem. Many drivers rely on bridges for daily travel, so delays can build quickly when something disrupts the flow.
The structure of a bridge can also affect how long it takes to clear a crash. With fewer access points for emergency crews, it may take more time to reach vehicles and reopen lanes.
