Why Speed-Related Crashes Result in Severe Outcomes
Speed can significantly increase crash severity, especially when a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes a fixed object, like a tree. Higher speeds reduce a driver’s ability to correct steering errors in time.
In rollover or single-vehicle crashes, speed increases the likelihood of vehicle instability. Once control is lost, impacts tend to be more severe due to the force involved.
Roadside objects such as trees, poles, or embankments can intensify damage when struck directly. Investigators typically review speed, roadway conditions, and driver actions to determine how the crash occurred.
