How Head-On and Rear-End Highway Collisions Can Happen on Rural Roads
Crashes on rural highways like Highway 71 often occur in areas where traffic is moving at higher speeds with fewer controlled intersections. Even minor changes in speed or lane position can quickly lead to a collision when vehicles are traveling in the same direction.
Driver distraction, following distance, and sudden braking are common factors that can contribute to crashes involving multiple vehicles. In some cases, limited visibility or road alignment near intersections can also play a role.
When two vehicles collide at highway speeds, the force of impact can be severe. Rural roadways may also have limited shoulders or recovery space, increasing the risk of serious outcomes. Investigators typically examine roadway conditions, vehicle positions, and speed factors when determining how these crashes occur.
