Bertrand, NE (April 22, 2026) – A 14-year-old student died following a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday, April 22, at the intersection of Highway 23 and A Road, just east of Bertrand. The crash was reported at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Authorities determined that a Dodge pickup heading westbound on Highway 23 attempted to turn south onto A Road and entered the path of an eastbound semi-tractor trailer. The teen, identified as Connor Hill of Holdrege, Nebraska, was a passenger in the pickup and did not survive his injuries.
The driver of the pickup suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, where they are expected to recover. The semi driver was taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital in Holdrege with minor injuries and has since been released.
Highway 23 was closed for approximately five hours while emergency units worked the scene. An autopsy has been requested as part of the ongoing process.
Authorities are actively investigating the crash, and findings will be forwarded for review to determine whether any charges are warranted.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Connor Hill.
What Happens After a Fatal Crash Involving a Minor in Nebraska?
When a crash results in the death of a minor, the process that follows typically involves several layers of review beyond a standard accident investigation. In Nebraska, the county attorney’s office may request an autopsy to help establish the full circumstances of the death. This is standard practice and helps ensure that all relevant facts are documented before any legal determinations are made.
Crash reconstruction is another step that often follows a fatal collision involving large vehicles like semi-trucks. Investigators measure skid marks, vehicle positions, and road conditions to build a detailed picture of how the crash unfolded. That information can take weeks to fully analyze, which is why official findings in serious crashes often come well after the initial reports.
