Jackson County, GA (August 12, 2026) – One person died, and another was critically hurt Monday evening in a five-vehicle accident on northbound I-85 near mile marker 136 in Jackson County.

The wreck happened around 5:22 p.m. Traffic had slowed ahead of a yellow Penske truck traveling in the right lane. The truck was following too closely and struck a Toyota Corolla, pushing it into the median wall.

The Penske truck then hit a Nissan Altima, which rotated and struck a Chevrolet Trax and Ford F-150. The truck stopped facing south, while the Trax and F-150 sustained minor damage.

The Corolla driver died after being taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The Altima driver was taken to the same hospital with critical injuries.

Georgia State Patrol arrested the Penske truck driver on charges including second-degree vehicular homicide and following too closely. The northbound lanes closed at 5:22 p.m. and reopened at 8:29 p.m.

The names of the drivers had not been released. Investigators had not said whether alcohol, drugs, or weather contributed to the collision. The investigation continues, and our condolences go to the family of the person who died while we wish the injured driver a full recovery.

What Happens in a Chain-Reaction Highway Crash?

Chain-reaction crashes can occur when one vehicle strikes another and sends it into the path of additional traffic. On busy highways, vehicles traveling close together may have limited time to react when traffic slows suddenly.

Following distance is especially important at higher speeds. Leaving more space between vehicles gives drivers additional time to recognize slowing traffic and brake safely.

The size and weight of the vehicles involved can also affect the severity of a collision. Damage may spread across several vehicles as they move into nearby lanes or barriers.

Investigators may examine vehicle positions, damage patterns, roadway markings, traffic conditions, and available witness accounts. These details can help establish the sequence of impacts and determine how the chain reaction developed.
