Jacksonville, FL (August 27, 2026) – An elderly bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle on Wednesday morning, August 26, near McCormick Road and Kernan Boulevard North in Jacksonville.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 7 a.m. A bicyclist wearing a helmet was making a left turn to travel westbound on McCormick Road when he was struck by a vehicle traveling west on the same road.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. McCormick Road at Kernan Boulevard has since reopened.

Additional information about the crash was expected from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of the bicyclist who lost his life. We also extend our thoughts to everyone affected by this tragic crash.

What Should Drivers Know About Bicycle Safety?

Bicyclists share the road with motor vehicles and can be vulnerable during collisions. Drivers should give cyclists adequate space when passing and remain alert for bicycles at intersections, driveways, and turning areas. Checking carefully before changing lanes or making a turn can help prevent a collision.

Drivers should also watch for cyclists who may be traveling in the same direction or crossing their path. Reduced visibility can make bicycles harder to see, particularly during early morning or nighttime hours. Staying focused on the roadway and avoiding distractions gives motorists more time to recognize vulnerable road users.

Cyclists can improve their visibility by using lights and reflective equipment when conditions require it. Wearing a properly fitted helmet can also help reduce the risk of serious head injuries during a crash. Both cyclists and motorists should follow traffic laws and remain attentive to one another throughout their journey.
