Arlington, TX (May 26, 2026) – A bicyclist died Monday afternoon, May 25, after being struck by a vehicle along eastbound Interstate 20 near Matlock Road in Arlington.
According to the Arlington Police Department, officers were called to the roadway just before 4 p.m. Investigators said the bicyclist was attempting to cross the interstate when a vehicle traveling in the second lane swerved to avoid hitting the rider.
Police said a Toyota Prius traveling behind that vehicle then struck the bicyclist. The person riding the bicycle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Prius and passengers inside the car received minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Eastbound I-20 near Cooper Street was temporarily shut down while crews investigated and cleared the roadway. The identity of the deceased had not been released on Tuesday pending notification of family members.
Investigators continue working to determine all factors connected to the fatal highway collision. Our sincere condolences go out to the loved ones of the person who died.
Why Interstate Bicycle Crashes Are Often Fatal
Interstates are designed for high-speed vehicle travel and generally do not allow bicycle traffic due to the dangers posed by fast-moving lanes and limited reaction time. When a bicyclist enters a highway, drivers may have only seconds to react, especially in heavy traffic.
Collisions involving bicycles on major highways frequently result in severe or fatal injuries because riders have little protection during an impact with a passenger vehicle. Investigators often examine traffic flow, visibility, lane positioning, and driver maneuvers after these roadway crashes occur. Sudden swerving by nearby drivers may also create additional hazards for surrounding vehicles traveling at interstate speeds.
