What Should Drivers Know About Crashes Involving Bicyclists?
Bicyclists have less physical protection than people inside passenger vehicles, which can increase the risk of serious injury during a crash. Drivers should watch carefully for bicycles when approaching intersections, turning, changing lanes, or entering driveways.
Visibility can affect how quickly a driver notices a bicyclist. Parked vehicles, buildings, signs, weather, and traffic can obstruct sight lines. Reducing speed and checking carefully before making turns can give drivers more time to respond.
Serious bicycle crash injuries may require specialized medical care. Trauma centers are equipped to treat patients with severe injuries involving the head, chest, abdomen, or other parts of the body.
