Why Is Crossing Highways So Dangerous?
Highways like interstates are designed for high-speed travel, often with vehicles moving at 60 mph or more. This makes it extremely dangerous for pedestrians, as drivers have very little time to react to someone on the roadway.
Limited lighting during overnight hours can further reduce visibility, making it even harder for drivers to see pedestrians in time to avoid a collision. Even when vehicles are stopped on the shoulder, exiting and attempting to cross multiple lanes of fast-moving traffic carries significant risk.
Whenever possible, individuals should avoid crossing highways on foot and instead seek safer alternatives such as nearby exits, overpasses, or contacting roadside assistance.
