What Are Common Risks for Child Cyclists on City Streets?
Children riding bicycles on city streets may face different risks than adults, especially in areas with mixed traffic. Drivers may not always expect younger riders, and children may have less experience judging speed and distance when crossing intersections.
Intersections can be particularly challenging because of turning vehicles and changing traffic patterns. Limited visibility, parked cars, and distractions can make it harder for both drivers and cyclists to react quickly.
Protective gear and awareness of surroundings can help reduce risk, but traffic conditions still play a large role. Streets that connect neighborhoods often see a mix of speeds and activity, which can increase the chance of crashes involving cyclists.
