Bronx, NY (January 26, 2026) – A deadly apartment fire broke out on Sunday at 2264 Grand Ave in the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx, leaving one person dead and prompting a large-scale response from fire and emergency crews.
Firefighters from the FDNY were dispatched to the scene after multiple 911 calls reported smoke and flames visible from the upper floors of the residential building. Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy smoke conditions and worked quickly to gain access to the affected units. During search operations, one person was found unresponsive inside the apartment and was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the fire.
Emergency medical personnel were on standby as fire crews battled the blaze and conducted primary and secondary searches throughout the building. The fire was eventually brought under control, but not before causing substantial interior damage to the unit and surrounding areas.
Residents of the building were evacuated, and several were evaluated for smoke exposure on-site, though no additional injuries have been reported. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the FDNY Fire Marshal’s Office. Officials are reviewing the scene to determine whether smoke detectors were present and functioning at the time of the incident.
This tragic incident has left the local community in mourning. Our deepest sympathies are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
