Broward County, FL (May 10, 2026) – Two Florida drivers lost their lives in a multi-vehicle accident early Sunday morning along the Alligator Alley section of Interstate 75 in Broward County.
The collision happened around 2:18 a.m. on May 10, after a disabled 2001 Vanhool commuter bus stopped in the outside southbound lane of Interstate 75. The bus driver, identified as a 75-year-old man from Doral, was outside the vehicle when a 2024 Toyota RAV4 approached the scene and attempted to swerve left after the driver reportedly failed to notice the stopped bus in time.
The Toyota struck the bus, then hit a guardrail before coming to a partial stop in the inside lane and on the shoulder. Shortly afterward, a 2007 Honda Odyssey approached the crash scene and tried to avoid the vehicles by swerving right. The Odyssey collided with one of the damaged vehicles and overturned.
Authorities said the driver of the Honda Odyssey, a 45-year-old man from Miami, was pronounced dead at the scene along with the bus driver. A fourth vehicle, identified as a 2017 Nissan Rogue, also became involved after the driver attempted to move onto the outside shoulder but struck the rear side of the bus.
The driver of the Toyota RAV4 and the driver and three passengers inside the Nissan Rogue suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Southbound lanes of Interstate 75 were closed for several hours before reopening around 8:08 a.m. on Sunday, May 10.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our sincere condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased.
How Disabled Vehicles Can Lead to Serious Highway Collisions
Disabled vehicles on major highways can create dangerous conditions, especially during overnight hours when visibility is reduced. Drivers traveling at highway speeds may have little time to react when a stopped vehicle blocks part of the roadway. Sudden lane changes or swerving attempts can increase the risk of chain-reaction crashes involving several vehicles.
Multi-vehicle accidents often become more severe because drivers approaching the scene may not immediately recognize hazards ahead. Traffic flow, darkness, weather conditions, and roadway design can all affect how quickly motorists respond. Crashes involving overturned vehicles or blocked lanes may also lead to extended road closures while crews clear debris and assist injured people.
In many highway accidents, investigators later review vehicle positions, skid marks, visibility conditions, and witness statements to better understand how the sequence of impacts unfolded.
