Caldwell, MO (January 4, 2026) – A Saturday evening rear-end crash along US-36, just west of Center Rd and three miles east of Cameron, left one woman injured and both vehicles heavily damaged, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred around 6:50 p.m. on January 3. Investigators say a 1995 GMC Yukon, driven by a 34-year-old man from Cameron, was slowing to make a left-hand turn at the median crossover. Behind him, a 2015 Chevrolet Impala driven by a 23-year-old woman from Hamilton failed to slow down and struck the Yukon from behind. Authorities noted that the driver of the Impala was distracted by an electronic device at the time of the crash.

The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles. The Impala came to rest in the median east of Center Rd, facing eastbound, while the Yukon managed to stop on the eastbound shoulder. The Impala was totaled and towed by Legacy Towing, and the Yukon, which sustained extensive damage, was removed by Scotty’s Towing.

Emergency responders from Cameron Ambulance transported the female driver to Cameron Regional Medical Center with injuries. She had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The male driver of the Yukon was uninjured and had not been using a safety device.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted on the scene by Sgt. J.P. Lynch and the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Department. An official investigation remains underway.

We wish the injured driver a full and speedy recovery and extend our thoughts to all involved.

Distracted Driving and Rear-End Collisions in Missouri

Rear-end crashes are one of the most common types of vehicle collisions, and Saturday evening’s incident east of Cameron is a reminder of how distraction, even momentary, can lead to serious consequences. In this case, the driver of the Chevrolet Impala was reportedly distracted by an electronic device, resulting in a failure to slow down as the vehicle ahead prepared to turn.

Distraction remains a leading cause of crashes on Missouri highways, particularly on fast-moving rural corridors like US-36. With vehicles often traveling at high speeds, even a few seconds of inattention can lead to high-impact collisions. The consequences may include injuries, significant vehicle damage, and long-term recovery needs.

Fortunately, in this crash, the injured driver was wearing a seatbelt, which likely helped minimize the severity of her injuries. However, distracted driving doesn’t only affect the person at fault; it puts everyone on the road at risk. Drivers must remain fully alert and avoid device use while operating a vehicle.

Missouri continues to see growing efforts to curb distracted driving through public awareness campaigns and safety enforcement. Still, crashes such as this serve as a clear example of why constant vigilance behind the wheel is essential.
