Candor, NY (May 17, 2026) – A motorcyclist was killed on Saturday afternoon, May 16, following a collision involving an SUV and a motorcycle on State Route 96 (Owego Road) in the town of Candor, Tioga County.
According to New York State Police, the crash occurred just after 12:00 p.m. when a Ford SUV was traveling southbound on SR-96. The driver, an 88-year-old man, attempted to make a left turn into Iron Kettle Farms and reportedly failed to see an oncoming Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling northbound.
Officials said the SUV turned directly into the motorcycle’s path, and the rider was unable to avoid the impact. Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported both the SUV driver and the motorcyclist to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital.
The motorcyclist later died from injuries sustained in the crash. The SUV driver was also hospitalized and was listed in stable condition following the collision. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity.
State police confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine all contributing factors.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the motorcyclist during this tragic time.
Why Left-Turn Motorcycle Collisions Are Commonly Investigated
Left-turn crashes involving motorcycles are frequently reviewed because they often occur when drivers misjudge distance or fail to see an oncoming rider. Even brief lapses in attention can lead to severe consequences because motorcycles offer limited protection.
Investigators typically examine turning movements, sight lines, and vehicle speed to understand how the collision unfolded. Roadway markings, traffic conditions, and visibility near intersections are also evaluated.
In many cases, witness statements and vehicle damage patterns help reconstruct the timing of the impact. These details are used to determine how and why the turning vehicle entered the motorcycle’s path.
