How Nighttime Visibility Affects Pedestrian Safety on City Streets
Pedestrian crashes often occur at night due to reduced visibility for both drivers and those walking. Street lighting, dark clothing, and limited reaction time can make it harder to see someone crossing the road, especially outside marked crosswalks.
Vehicle speed also affects how quickly a driver can respond. At higher speeds, stopping distance increases, leaving less time to avoid a person in the roadway. Road design, such as the number of lanes and traffic flow, can further impact how safely pedestrians can cross.
Using reflective gear, crossing at well-lit areas, and staying alert to traffic patterns can help reduce risk. Drivers can improve safety by scanning ahead carefully and adjusting speed in areas where pedestrian activity is possible.
