What Michigan’s Traffic Fatality Data Tells Us About Road Safety
Michigan tracks traffic fatalities and serious injuries on a rolling basis throughout the year, giving a broad picture of how dangerous state roads are at any given time. These numbers are compiled from crashes reported across all counties and road types, from local streets to major interstates. The data helps officials identify patterns and periods of higher risk.
Single-vehicle crashes — where no other vehicle is involved — make up a significant share of traffic deaths in Michigan and across the country. They can result from a wide range of factors, including road conditions, driver fatigue, medical events, or loss of vehicle control. Because there is often only one vehicle involved, reconstructing exactly what happened can take time and careful review of the physical evidence at the scene.
