What Can Lead to Crashes at Highway Merge Areas?
Crashes near highway merge points often happen when drivers attempt to enter traffic while other vehicles are already traveling at higher speeds. Limited reaction time and differences in vehicle speed can increase the risk of collisions in these areas.
Investigators commonly review merging patterns, lane positioning, and traffic flow after these types of accidents. Drivers entering a highway are generally expected to adjust their speed to safely join moving traffic. At the same time, through-traffic drivers may have little time to avoid a vehicle that suddenly enters their lane. Damage to the vehicles, roadway markings, and witness accounts can help explain how the collision occurred. Visibility, weather conditions, and traffic volume may also be examined when determining the sequence of events surrounding a merge-related crash.
