Why Highway Intersections Can Be Dangerous for Motorcyclists
Motorcycle crashes at highway intersections often happen when vehicles attempt to cross or turn onto busy roadways. Because motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, drivers may have difficulty judging their speed or distance, especially when traffic is moving quickly.
Investigators commonly examine sightlines, vehicle positions, and right-of-way conditions after these accidents. Intersections that connect rural roads with highways can create sudden crossing situations where reaction time is limited. Damage to the motorcycle and other vehicles may also help show the direction and force of impact. In many cases, roadway speed, lighting, and traffic flow are reviewed to better understand how the collision occurred. Protective gear, helmet use, and the angle of impact can also affect the severity of injuries suffered during a motorcycle crash.
