Abilene, TX (August 12, 2026) – Two people were critically injured Monday morning after a passenger vehicle crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 20 in Abilene.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Monday, August 10, on westbound I-20 near Exit 278. According to early reports, the passenger vehicle struck the back of the tractor-trailer.

Both people inside the passenger vehicle suffered serious injuries. The driver, who is from Abilene, had to be extricated from the vehicle by fire personnel before being flown by helicopter to Hendrick Medical Center.

The passenger, who is from Merkel, was transported to a hospital by ambulance. No further information about their conditions was immediately available.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. We are thinking of both injured individuals and wishing them a full recovery.

Why Rear-End Crashes With Tractor-Trailers Can Be Severe

Collisions involving the rear of a tractor-trailer can result in serious injuries because of the significant difference in size and weight between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. A passenger vehicle can sustain substantial damage when it strikes the rear of a large truck, particularly at highway speeds.

When a person becomes trapped after a crash, firefighters may need to use specialized equipment to safely extricate the occupant. Investigators may examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness accounts, and available footage to determine how the collision occurred.

These investigations help authorities establish the sequence of events and identify the factors that contributed to the crash.
