Castroville, CA (January 14, 2026) – Two people suffered major injuries early Monday morning in a violent head-on collision on northbound Highway 1 near State Route 183 in the Castroville area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. and involved a small red Volkswagen Beetle and a dark-colored Honda sedan. CHP investigators reported that the vehicles collided in the northbound lanes, leaving significant debris and shattered glass scattered across the roadway. One of the cars reportedly came to rest off the shoulder with extensive front-end damage.
Eyewitness accounts suggested that the Honda may have been swerving prior to the collision, though the precise cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Due to the severity of the impact, firefighters and CHP officers were forced to extricate both drivers from their vehicles. The two injured individuals were treated at the scene before being rushed to nearby hospitals for further care. Their conditions remain undisclosed as of Wednesday morning.
CHP is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether impairment or another factor contributed to the collision.
