Why Centerline-Crossing Crashes Often Result in Severe Injuries
Centerline-crossing crashes are among the most serious roadway accidents because they frequently involve vehicles traveling in opposite directions. When two vehicles meet head-on, the combined force can lead to severe injuries even when both drivers are traveling within posted speed limits.
Several factors can contribute to a vehicle drifting across the centerline. Driver fatigue, distraction, medical emergencies, poor visibility, or attempts to avoid roadway hazards are examples that may be considered during a review of a roadway accident. Road design, weather, and traffic patterns can also be examined.
Investigators often look at vehicle positions, tire marks, roadway evidence, and witness accounts to determine how a vehicle entered the opposing lane. These findings can help explain the sequence of events and provide a clearer picture of what occurred before the collision took place.
