Glasco, KS (July 28, 2026) – A 70-year-old man was seriously injured in a head-on collision early on Sunday, July 26. The vehicles came together at 3:37 a.m. on U.S. Highway 24, about three miles east of Glasco.

A 2007 Chevrolet Aveo was traveling east when it crossed the centerline. The car then met a westbound 2019 Chrysler 300 in the opposing lane.

Chevrolet driver James Lee Gingell of Glasco was taken to Salina Regional Hospital. The Chrysler driver, 42-year-old Jessica Alexandra Mendoza of Newton, was reported to have injuries.

A passenger in the Chrysler, 44-year-old Tommy Cole Twitchell of Norton, was not hurt.

The accident remains under examination as investigators review the circumstances. We hope those affected receive the care and support needed during recovery.

How Can Centerline Crossings Cause Severe Head-on Collisions?

Crossing the centerline can place a vehicle directly in the path of traffic moving the opposite way. Drivers may have little time or space to brake, swerve, or avoid contact, especially at night.

A frontal strike can create strong forces because both vehicles are moving toward each other. Seat belts, airbags, and front-end structures can reduce harm, but the sudden change in speed may still cause head, chest, spine, or leg trauma.

Road lighting, curves, lane markings, vehicle speed, and visibility can influence the severity of a wreck. Medical teams may also check occupants for internal bleeding or concussion symptoms that are not immediately clear. The angle of contact and passenger-compartment damage can further affect the type of injuries reported.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
