Charleston, MS (February 26, 2026) – Two Charleston residents lost their lives in a head-on crash early on Tuesday, February 24, along Hwy 32 east of the city.
The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. when a 2013 Hyundai Tucson traveling westbound collided with an eastbound 2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The impact occurred in a valley area about a quarter mile past Tatum Pond Rd, during dark morning conditions.
The drivers were identified as 64-year-old Jimmie Kimbrell and 47-year-old Shawanda Louise Brooks, both of Charleston. Both vehicles caught fire following the crash, and the two drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency units responded and worked to clear the roadway. Traffic in the area was redirected for more than four hours while crews managed the crash site.
Authorities later confirmed both victims’ identities after examination and forensic testing. Funeral arrangements for both victims are being handled by a local funeral service provider.
The incident remains under investigation by authorities. Our condolences go out to the victims’ loved ones.
What Happens During Head-on Crashes and Why They Are So Dangerous
Head-on crashes are among the most serious types of roadway accidents because both vehicles are often moving toward each other at high speeds. This combined force greatly increases the severity of damage and the risk of fatal injuries.
These crashes can occur for several reasons, including loss of vehicle control, poor visibility, slippery road conditions, or drifting across the center line. Dark conditions in early morning hours can also make it harder for drivers to react in time.
Vehicle safety features such as airbags and reinforced frames can reduce harm, but the force involved in head-on collisions remains extremely high. Road design, proper lighting, and safe driving habits all help reduce the likelihood of these devastating accidents.
