Chicago, IL (April 14, 2026) – A man was hurt Sunday night, April 12, after a crash involving two vehicles sent one car into a bus stop in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. The incident happened around 10:38 p.m. near the intersection of West Belmont Avenue, North Ashland Avenue, and North Lincoln Avenue.
According to reports, a 19-year-old driver in a white sport utility vehicle was traveling south on Ashland Avenue and turned right onto Belmont Avenue. During the turn, the SUV sideswiped another vehicle heading west on Belmont Avenue.
Following the initial impact, the SUV veered off course and struck a bus shelter near the intersection. A man standing nearby at the stop was hit and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital in good condition, while both drivers declined medical treatment.
The crash remains under investigation. We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
How Do Secondary Impacts Happen After Initial Crashes?
Secondary impacts can occur when a vehicle loses control after an initial collision. Even a minor sideswipe can cause a driver to veer off the roadway, especially when turning or changing lanes at intersections.
Urban intersections often include nearby structures such as bus stops, storefronts, and sidewalks. When a vehicle leaves the roadway, these areas can become part of the crash scene, increasing the risk to pedestrians.
Traffic density and complex layouts can also contribute to these situations. With vehicles approaching from multiple directions, even a brief loss of control can lead to unexpected and wider-reaching impacts.
