Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a crash more likely to turn deadly?
Speed at the moment of impact, the size and type of vehicles involved, and how exposed a victim is (such as a scooter or motorcycle rider versus someone inside a car) all affect the likelihood of a fatal outcome.
Does speed really change the odds of survival?
Yes. Even modest increases in speed raise both the force of a collision and the distance needed to stop, which cuts down the time a driver has to avoid a crash and increases the severity of injuries.
Why do officials stress seat belt use so much?
A seat belt keeps an occupant from being thrown from a vehicle or thrown against the interior during a crash, which are two of the most common ways crash injuries become fatal.
What should a family do after a fatal crash?
Families typically start by requesting the official crash report from the investigating agency and contacting the medical examiner's office for information on next steps.
