TOLEDO, Lucas County, Ohio, Nov. 5, 2026 — A man died early Thursday morning, November 5, after a two-vehicle crash sent his SUV off Byrne Road and into the front porch of a home in south Toledo, according to Toledo police.
The crash happened at about 1:15 a.m. near the railroad tracks on Byrne Road, police said. Investigators said the man was driving a Toyota SUV that had just crossed the tracks when it collided with a Jeep driven by a woman who had reportedly just turned onto Byrne Road from a side street.
The impact pushed the man's SUV off the roadway. It struck a tree, rolled onto its side, and hit the front porch of a nearby house. The man died at the scene. Police said the home did not sustain structural damage.
Emergency crews evaluated the woman driving the Jeep. Byrne Road between Detroit Avenue and Heatherdowns Boulevard was closed for the investigation and has since reopened.
The crash remains under review. We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim, and we wish the injured driver a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does impairment usually factor into fatal crashes?
Alcohol or drug impairment is a common factor in fatal crashes nationally, though whether it played a role here has not been confirmed by police.
Where do fatal crashes most commonly happen?
Fatal crashes frequently occur at intersections, on curves, or where vehicles cross paths after turning, similar to the circumstances described in this crash.
What makes a crash more likely to be deadly?
Higher speeds, the angle of impact, and whether a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes a fixed object, like a tree, all increase the chance a crash turns fatal.
How does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?
Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which lowers the odds of survival even in a crash that might otherwise be survivable.
