Knoxville, TN (July 3, 2026) – A 4-year-old girl was critically injured on Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle in Knoxville, and a 54-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers responded to a serious crash near Merchants Drive and Cedar Lane shortly after 9:30 p.m. on July 1.
Preliminary findings indicate that Charles Jump, 54, became involved in an argument with another person before allegedly driving his vehicle into a 4-year-old girl who was playing on a curb. Police said a physical altercation followed, during which Jump’s vehicle also struck several parked or nearby vehicles.
The child suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition.
Authorities arrested Jump on an active Sevier County warrant for domestic assault and for allegedly driving on a revoked license. Police said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
The Knoxville Police Department closed portions of the area while officers investigated the scene. We extend our thoughts to the injured child and her family and hope for her full recovery.
How Are Crashes Involving Pedestrians and Criminal Allegations Investigated?
When a pedestrian is seriously injured, and criminal conduct is suspected, investigators conduct both a traffic crash investigation and a criminal investigation. Officers document vehicle damage, roadway evidence, debris, and the location of everyone involved while also collecting witness statements and surveillance footage.
Investigators may examine whether the driver’s actions before, during, and after the incident violated traffic or criminal laws. Vehicle inspections, electronic data, and medical evidence are reviewed alongside interviews to establish a complete timeline of events.
As additional evidence is gathered, authorities determine whether further criminal charges are warranted. This thorough process helps ensure the facts surrounding the incident are fully documented before legal decisions are made.
