How Are Pursuit-Related Crashes Investigated?
Collisions that occur during or following law enforcement pursuits require investigators to examine both the crash itself and the circumstances surrounding the pursuit. Officers typically document vehicle damage, skid marks, debris, traffic signal timing, and the final resting positions of the vehicles to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Investigators may also review dash camera footage, surveillance video, radio communications, and witness statements to determine how the pursuit unfolded. When multiple vehicles and numerous occupants are involved, each person’s injuries and vehicle movements are documented as part of the investigation.
By analyzing physical evidence alongside electronic records and witness accounts, investigators work to establish a complete timeline of the incident. This process helps provide a clearer understanding of the events leading up to and during the collision.
