Poland, OH (July 30, 2026) – A 4-year-old boy lost his life after an SUV left SR-224 on Tuesday afternoon in Poland. The accident happened around 5:15 p.m. near milepost 21 when the westbound vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway.

Investigators said the SUV went down an embankment before striking the slope and a tree. The vehicle then came to rest in a culvert. A 61-year-old driver sustained serious injuries, while a 4-month-old baby was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The 4-year-old later died after arriving at the hospital.

Preliminary findings indicate none of the occupants were properly restrained, and investigators believe drug impairment may have contributed to the wreck. SR-224 was closed in both directions for several hours before reopening. The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing as additional evidence is reviewed.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the child’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Why Restraint Systems Are Critical During Roadway Accidents

Seat belts and child restraint systems are designed to reduce movement inside a vehicle during a sudden stop or rollover. Properly secured occupants are generally less likely to be ejected or strike interior surfaces, which can reduce the severity of injuries. Young children require age- and size-appropriate car seats or booster seats that are installed and used according to manufacturer instructions.

In serious roadway accidents, investigators frequently document restraint use alongside vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and other physical evidence. These findings help explain how injuries occurred and can provide valuable information about factors that influenced the outcome of the accident.
