How Lane-Crossing Crashes Might Occur on Two-Lane Roads
Crashes on two-lane roads sometimes occur when a vehicle crosses the center line and enters oncoming traffic. These roads often carry vehicles traveling in opposite directions without a physical divider separating lanes.
Several factors can contribute to a vehicle drifting or crossing into the opposite lane. Driver distraction, fatigue, sudden steering movements, or attempts to avoid obstacles may cause a vehicle to leave its lane.
Road design and visibility can also affect how safely drivers stay within their lanes. Curves, narrow shoulders, and limited sight distance may increase the risk of a vehicle crossing the center line.
When a car enters an oncoming lane, the risk of a head-on collision increases significantly. These types of crashes can result in serious damage due to the combined speed of both vehicles at impact.
