How Hit-and-Run Fatal Crashes Are Reviewed
Hit-and-run investigations often focus on identifying the fleeing vehicle through witness accounts and physical evidence left behind at the scene. Investigators may examine paint transfer, broken vehicle parts, or tire marks to help determine the type of vehicle involved.
In nighttime crashes, lighting conditions and roadway visibility are also commonly reviewed. Surveillance cameras from nearby homes or businesses can sometimes provide useful footage of the vehicle before or after the collision.
When a pedestrian is outside a stopped vehicle or trailer, investigators may also analyze vehicle positioning and lane space to better understand how the impact occurred. These details help reconstruct the sequence of events surrounding the crash.
