Queens, NY (July 16, 2026) – A civilian and a firefighter were hurt after a fast-moving fire spread through three multi-family homes on Tuesday afternoon, July 14, in the Woodhaven neighborhood of Queens.

Emergency units were called just before 4 p.m. to 85-42 and 85-44 76th St, between 85 Dr and 85 Rd. Officials said the fire began at one home before quickly extending to the neighboring residences, affecting all three buildings. An 18-year-old resident, Daden Ghising, escaped the home before returning inside to rescue her dog.

One civilian and one firefighter received treatment for minor injuries. Two cats died in the fire. The three-alarm response remained at the scene until the fire was brought under control shortly after 5:30 p.m. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined as the investigation continues.

We are thinking of everyone affected and wish those who were hurt a speedy recovery.

Why Fires Spread Quickly Between Attached Homes

Fires involving attached or closely spaced homes can spread rapidly because flames and heat may move through shared walls, attics, roofs, or nearby exterior surfaces. Once a fire extends beyond the building where it began, additional resources are needed to protect neighboring properties and prevent further damage.

Hot weather can also make firefighting operations more challenging. High temperatures increase physical stress on emergency personnel wearing protective equipment, leading departments to rotate crews more frequently to reduce the risk of heat-related illness while maintaining suppression efforts.

Residents can improve fire safety by installing and maintaining working smoke alarms, preparing an evacuation plan, and ensuring everyone in the household knows multiple ways to exit the home. Quick evacuation and early notification of emergency services can help reduce injuries when a fire occurs.
