How Speed and Alcohol Can Affect Crash Severity
Speeding reduces the amount of time a driver has to react to changes in traffic conditions, such as sudden stops, lane shifts, or unexpected hazards. It also increases stopping distance and the force of impact during a collision, which can lead to more severe vehicle damage and a higher likelihood of serious injuries.
Alcohol further compounds these risks by impairing judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Drivers under the influence may have difficulty maintaining lane position, accurately judging distances, or responding appropriately to other vehicles and traffic signals.
When both excessive speed and alcohol are involved, the danger increases significantly. The combination can reduce a driver’s ability to make safe decisions while also increasing the severity of any crash that occurs. These factors create especially hazardous conditions on busy roadways, where quick reactions and full awareness are critical to avoiding collisions.
