What Dangers Do Wheelchair Users Face When Crossing Roads in Kansas?
People using wheelchairs or mobility devices face unique challenges when crossing streets, particularly on roads without dedicated accessible crossings or curb cuts. Electric wheelchairs move more slowly than walking pedestrians, which means they spend more time in the path of traffic when crossing. Drivers may not always anticipate the presence of a wheelchair user entering the road, especially during early morning hours when visibility can still be limited.
In Kansas and across the country, pedestrian safety infrastructure for wheelchair users varies widely from one neighborhood to another. Streets without marked crosswalks, signal-controlled intersections, or accessible ramps can force wheelchair users to cross in less protected areas. These gaps in road design can put mobility-device users at greater risk than other pedestrians in the same area.
