A 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan was traveling south on I-235 when it failed to slow down with traffic and struck the back of a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup. Both people hurt in the crash were the drivers of the two vehicles. No passengers were reported in either vehicle.
One driver was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The other driver’s injuries were described as minor. The Kansas Highway Patrol crash log later described the injuries for both drivers as suspected minor, though the differing accounts have not been fully reconciled in available reports.
Southbound I-235 traffic backed up near Central following the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision, and more details will be released as they become available. We are thinking of both drivers as they receive medical care.
What Makes Highway Rear-End Crashes Common During Rush Hour in Kansas?
Morning rush hour creates some of the most congested and stop-and-go conditions seen on Kansas interstates. Drivers who are not watching the traffic ahead closely enough can find themselves closing in on slower vehicles faster than they can react. When following distances are short and speeds are high, even a brief lapse in attention can lead to a serious rear-end crash.
Interstate 235 in Wichita carries a heavy flow of commuter traffic through the west side of the city each morning. Merging vehicles, lane changes, and sudden slowdowns are all common during peak hours. Maintaining a safe following distance and staying alert to brake lights ahead are among the most effective ways drivers can reduce the chance of a rear-end collision in these conditions.
