Colorado Springs, CO (March 21, 2026) – A woman was seriously hurt in a hit-and-run crash Friday night at an intersection on the city’s southeast side. The incident occurred around 10:11 p.m. on Friday, March 20, at South Academy Boulevard and Pace Drive.
Emergency units arrived at the scene and found the injured woman lying in the roadway. Reports indicate she had been riding an electric dirt bike northbound on Academy Boulevard as she approached Pace Drive.
Investigators say a black SUV traveling southbound attempted to turn left onto eastbound Pace Drive. The driver failed to yield and struck the dirt bike before leaving the scene.
Authorities later located the suspect at a nearby apartment complex while responding to an unrelated call. The driver, identified as 23-year-old Yamiel Navarrete-Garcia, was taken into custody on charges connected to the crash.
The victim’s current condition beyond serious injuries has not been released. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Hit-and-Run Crashes Involving Bicycles Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Collisions involving bicycles or small motorized bikes often result in severe harm because riders have little protection. Even at moderate speeds, impact with a larger vehicle can cause serious injuries, especially when the rider is thrown onto the roadway.
Intersections are common locations for these incidents. Drivers making turns may not always notice smaller vehicles like bikes, particularly at night or in low visibility conditions. Failure to yield is a frequent factor in crashes involving turning vehicles.
In hit-and-run situations, delayed medical response or lack of immediate information can make the situation more difficult. Witness accounts, nearby cameras, and physical evidence at the scene are often used to piece together what happened and identify those involved.
